@maique I studied Japanese for a little while in high school and college (technically: got a minor). I knew about bread/pan but not the others.
@toddgrotenhuis I was surprised to see a few of the words for stuff like that: bread, cup, Saturday… and also discovered that THE word that always comes up on the subject doesn’t have a Portuguese origin at all: arigato! It sounds exactly like our “Obrigado”!
@maique My wife on more than one occasion has asked me what the Portuguese word for thank you is. “Is it Arigato?” she asks. 😂
@maique Just noticed this and was reminded at my surprise when I visited Portugal back in 2008 and realized during and after that trip that so many words that I thought were Bombay slang were actually Portugese, or of Portugese origin 🤯
@samgrover I had no idea, but it’s easy to believe, now that you mention it. I actually find it impressive that the words survived this long, and as slang!
