I’m so upset by the nonsensical reactions to Basecamp’s policy changes that I’m going to go dark while I cool off and wait for everyone to stop pretending to know how one simply must run a small, growing company for 20 years. The lesson we learn from this might surprise us.
@jack I can relate to this. I've chimed in a little, but mostly held back because passions are so strong that I can’t add much to the discussion in a constructive way. It'll be really interesting to see how people feel next week, and next month.
@manton It is difficult to have a fair objective view. In these difficult times, one bad press statement can ruin a reputation or be taken out of context.
@Munish That is one thing I've been thinking a lot about this week: reputation. It takes a long time to build a good reputation, but very little time for it to unravel.
@jack One of the challenging things about this cultural moment (for me) is that folks are quick to make harsh value judgements about a person’s character and heart. Controversy occurs, everyone quick, raise your hand and be counted, sort the good ppl from the bad. Now let’s shame and shun those who dared be vulnerable, moderate, nuanced, or unsure.

@Cheri Well said. Politics especially has become so divisive that it's like it has trained us to be a 2-party system for every possible issue. Also, yes to tacos.
@manton agreed. Basecamp may have approached this differently. It's called an “acceptable usage policy” for online work tools, where certain things cannot be discussed online. They should acknowledge there is a problem, prefer it not to be spoken about online and start conversations for change with the organisation with employees. Many companies have been doing this since the riots of 2020. Dismissing it all and offering money to go, seems way out there and there must be aspects we don't know about. ie, Non Disclosure Agreements have been signed.
