I should know this, but I’m looking for a way to share a bunch of event photos with family. I don’t want them in my iCloud library and I don’t want anyone to have to log in or follow me anywhere. They should be able to easily add them to their own photo library. Currently, I’m using SmugMug. Others?

@jack Aren’t iCloud Shared Albums separate from your Library?

@pratik yes, when I had house work done the last time, I shared just a specific album in my library with my contractor, worked really well

@jack you might find these helpful montaigne.io or public.photos

@anniegreens Shared Albums are different from regular Albums, right? I mean, photos will be copied and not moved so you can always ‘expire’ the shared album after a while. I assume non-Apple users can view it too, right? @jack

@pratik @anniegreens I'm not sure, honestly, but I don't know a way to add photos to a shared album that don't end up on the phone or library at some point. I'm trying to avoid having to manage that. Maybe it's less a hassle than I assume it is.

@joshua Thanks. I haven't tried public.photos yet but it looks quite nice. I don't know that I can control the level of access with it. Also, I still think the photos would need to start on my phone, which I'd like to avoid.

@jack oh! Yeah. They will be part of your library and on your phone. I assumed you wanted to give someone access to some photos in your Library. If they are elsewhere and you have to upload them to the web, then there are plenty of solutions including Flickr. @anniegreens

@silverfox That could work, but I've never gotten a handle on sharing "private" photos in albums. Seems like they would "leak" into the photostream but it's been a while. I should take another look, thanks.

@jack maybe a notion site would be easier?

@pratik I’m forever amazed at the technical aptitude of my fellow nerd, and felt the same way when I saw the sites

@joshua Notion and I don't get along well, but that or something like Craft would probably be decent options otherwise.

@pratik yeah, they will part of your library, but sequestered from anyone seeing all of the library: support.apple.com/en-us/HT2...

@jack I researched this a couple years ago. Smugmug is one of the only services that does what you want in a privacy focuses but still shareable manner. Flickr, which SmugMug now owns, is a close second. This was several years ago so maybe there are new options. In SmugMug I have a template that includes the privacy and sharing permissions I want. I use it to easily share family event photos with just a link. I believe SmugMug has a permission where someone can download the whole album. From there they can drag and drop into their photo solution of choice. I’ve been paying for Smumug for over a decade now so it gets fuzzy on what features are on what plans these days.

@camacho Yes you're right, SmugMug does this better than anyone. I was thinking of canceling my subscription later this year, but perhaps not. I do wish we'd see some new features there that /aren't/ about selling prints, though.

@jack Here here. I’m not a pro photographer it is really just one of the last if not the last indie photo companies that shares my tech values.

@jack FWIW, I've used SmugMug for this, I create an album with a "hidden" link that I share. It have worked fine, it's easy for the recipients and since the albums are hidden they don't show up on the site (I do collect them in a folder for my own sanity).

I'm in the process of winding down my SmugMug account, the price increase is a bit too much for me (subscribing 10 years is quite a bit of money).

@jemostrom I thought about keeping SmugMug and letting go of Glass, but I want both even though I need neither. I wish I /needed/ SmugMug.

@jack much the same here. If I had made some money that covered the subscription I would use Smugmug.

@jack I’ve used google drive (not photos) for this in the past, and it’s worked well. Upload folder, set share to anyone with link. Visitors will get a gallery, and can download individual files, or all in a zip file.

@jack dropbox or any of the file sharing platforms. I forget which service my local photo lab uses, eg., but it’s a one time url to download my scans.
