More on the fediverse stars symbol, this time from Manuel Moreale:

I am no fediverse citizen but I do consider myself a good citizen of the web. I try my best to make it a better place and I try to encourage people to own their corners of the web. Am I excluded from your fancy club because I don’t “federate”?

This gets back to my point about “social web” vs. fediverse. Manu has a fantastic blog and he’s making the web better. The social web (IndieWeb!) should connect seamlessly to blogs without an extra protocol layer over the web.

@larand Yes and no. Another way to look at it is that he's already supporting RSS and other standards, so why can't his blog work with the fediverse? I would like to see more platforms that support ActivityPub and other standards, so we can include as much as the web as possible.

@manton I quite agree. I’m not an evangelist for ActivityPub, although I do admire what it tries to do. I’d love to see all major platforms interact, including Bluesky and anyone else. In my mind, the Fediverse includes (or should include) many protocols. One of the reasons I chose Micro.blog is its federation ability such that I can follow people on Mastodon, Threads and Bluesky in one place.

@larand Thanks! Exactly, and "social web" kind of sidesteps the question of whether Bluesky is technically part of the fediverse. Most people would say "no" but I think it's clearly part of the social web.
