Quick question for everyone. How many of you are using headers in your blogging? Are you using anything that denotes different sections?

@mandaris I seldom use them. My main obstacle is that I would have a title for a section further down, but then it feels unbalanced when I don't use titles for the other sections before or following. And most of my longer writing is not long enough anyway to warrant headers.

As an alternative I sometimes use images – when I have one that makes sense and feel in to mood for the work.

@mandaris depends on the post. If it’s long enough and warrants dividing up into sections, then I’ll do it. Most posts are 3-500 words and don’t warrant headings.

@mandaris a long time ago I used to do this to break up some longer writing but I don't really do it anymore. I guess if I was writing something long enough that it made sense I might but 99% of the time anymore I don't think I would have a need for it.

@mandaris I don’t do that as much on MB as i did on my old blog.

I used headers on long explanatory posts with technical content, mostly. These days, I write technical documents (on gitlab) instead and then summarize what these are about in a post.

One case I still use those is when I have a long post with a lot of writing going on (usually over 1000 words) which is rare.

@mandaris for posts longer than about 500 words, almost always.

@jsonbecker @mandaris -- What he said. For anything over ~500, I always use titles and at least H1s. If it's something for work and I need to be mindful of SEO, I'll use H2s and judicious bolding as well. Not so much for personal essays, newsletters, etc. since I'm not out to rank for that stuff.

@mandaris It depends on the type of blog post, but, yes, I do. If the post is more stream of consciousness, even if long, then I usually don't. If I've thought about the content of the post and made an outline, then often they headers might follow the outline. I use them especially when a post is explaining something or naturally needs sections labelled.

@mandaris I have a custom header using TinyThem with microhooks that allows me to add links that now appear on every page in my my blog.
