Camping in Texas in the summer is not fun, but I keep thinking I’ll figure out how to solve it with technology, each time getting a little closer. It won’t be below 80° until 2am tonight.

@manton Having camped a few times in the Mojave Desert in my younger days, I eventually concluded that the only way to truly solve it is to pitch your tent inside a room at the Best Western.

@manton "Camping" (read: basic training) in Oklahoma from mid Jan through mid March 1983 wasn't fun, so I don't know how you're even doing that.

@larand the extent of my camping is the floor of a hotel room, which I’ve done many times traveling with a few crew mates to an out of town outrigger canoe race.

@manton I have a friend who swears by his Ecoflow. You can duct it so the noise is outside and you are just getting cold air into your tent/camper etc.

@hawaiiboy Did that once when I went to the Monterey Historic Automobile Races with friends before I was married. Not something I’d want to try again now at my age.

@markstoneman When I was in the national guard, I once had my shirt sleeve freeze into the ground being in those 10 person tents in the inland in October. @manton

@manton We solved that problem with a camper that has air conditioning.

@manton there’s also the absolute necessity to take a shower before bed or feel disgusting all night.

@danielpunkass Surprisingly not! At least not on the weekends. Out of 100+ campsites, there was only one spot available last night when I booked a few days early.

@manton I know people have opinions on Teslas, but they do have a camp mode where they can run the heat pump all night to keep you cool and dehumidified. And there's a campfire, too.

@briandigital I love that! I think that Rivian has something similar.

@manton I enjoy their work, and am quite bullish on Rivian since VW invested in them this week. I hope they offer something along the lines of the Model Y soon. I don't need/want a truck.

@manton Summer camping today has changed since my youth. And I’m not talking Therm-a-rests (although they are a great change!).

@manton I solved it (well, VA, not TX, but having lived there, I get it) by getting a tent that covers the back half of the Tesla. Put it in camping mode and blast the A/C out the hatchback. Works great for late Fall camping, too!
