@Gaby My work phone is my only phone. It isnā€™t enrolled in any enterprise crap so it is like as if I got my own except that I donā€™t have to pay for it or the phone contract

@hjertnes that's a novel arrangement. Do you work in any regulated (pharma, finance, etc.) industries?

@khurtwilliams Not that uncommon here in Norway. I work for a large IT consultancy / digital agency. But when I worked for a bank it worked more or less the same way.

The trick is to use the Outlook app from the app store instead of Mail.app to connect to Exchange servers. If you use Mail.app they can install certificates that can do a lot more shit.

@hjertnes in a zero trust environment, some IT security teams configure systems to ensure that the approved Mail User Agent (usually Outlook) are being used and block access to the Exchange/Office 365 servers if not. Some even containerise the MUA using something like AirWatch to have even more control.

@khurtwilliams Sure.

But getting a free phone / phone subscription is usually part of your contract for a lot of types of positions because it is hard to be competitive without it. And you are also legally required to provide a phone if it is required to do your job like for OTP codes etc.

All places I have worked you have the choice to get work e-mail on it or not. I usually donā€™t if I canā€™t do it in a way Iā€™m comfortable with.

@khurtwilliams I am wondering if after our MFA etc introduction I might benefit from a to switch to iOS outlook as well. I switched on macOS to outlook ages ago. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Having to do MFA dance every 30 days is no fun even by the fact I use 3 devices / fantastical and even some MS apps donā€™t globally see if have done MFA todo for example šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

@hjertnes see this.

SEC enforcement staff contacted multiple banks in recent weeks to check whether they have been adequately documenting employeesā€™ work-related communications, such as text messages and emails, with a focus on their personal devices, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

@hjertnes yes, I know. That's why I asked the original question. All the more reason why I don't understand why what you are doing is allowed.

@khurtwilliams There are a lot to this.

First of all, two different countries with different cultures and laws.

Second, as a developer I didnā€™t really have access to any information that would be very sensitive. Especially not in an e-mail.

There was a lot of security crap on the computers we got. But still I didnā€™t really have access to anything ā€œbankingā€ related that wasnā€™t public or would be public very soon.

If I remember correctly there was some very strict limits for how much of your e-mail history was available on phones though.

@khurtwilliams Things are most likely very different for people that actually can access anything ā€œcore banking systemsā€ in production.

@hjertnes itā€™s very different in the USA. I consult for a large Spanish bank. The USA teams donā€™t trust anything built by the Spanish team. The FEDs are on everyoneā€™s necks.

@hjertnes or a EU company with a large US presence?

@khurtwilliams ā€œEU companyā€ doesnā€™t make that much sense since the EU isnā€™t a country, and Iā€™m not based in a EU country.

Iā€™ve never been willing to discuss any job related stuff unless Iā€™m employed by a actual Norwegian company with a legal Norwegian employment contract.
