A few weeks back I decided to go ‘cheap’ and got an HDMI switcher and a couple of Amazon basic HDMI cables. The intention was to create a good enough solution for switching my screen between my new Mac and work laptop. Needless to say, it did not go well, and I ended up having to scrap the solution for what I knew was the superior (but pricer) option to begin with (a KVM USB-C switcher). Reminded of the old adage:

A poor man can afford only the very best.

@kaa It's amazing to think of all of the sub-par, shoddy items we create and push out into the world and how it seems to exist purely to maintain the inflated prices of that which just works.

I can't help but think of Pratchett's "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

@SimonWoods Ah man, I spoke too soon. This stupid switch doesn't work either...or at least it worked for like 10min and then it decided he had enough and stopped working. Sooooooo annoying.

@kaa ugh that sucks. It's weird that it worked to begin with. Looks like you're in for a bunch of digging around the web for other folks who came across this problem. I mean, you'd assume Apple would have guidance for it but I don't feel confident they would decide to make such a thing for many third-party accessories.
