By far one of the funnest app icon selection ever. Ice Cubes for Mastodon kills it in this aspect. A little choppy on the scrolling on the iPad though - hopefully will be sorted in an update.

@kaa All of this recent excellent work centred around Mastodon further proves the idea that lots of talented people were on Twitter almost entirely because that's where certain other people could be found, rather than anything to do with the experience of using Twitter at all.

@kaa I guess you too just read Gruber’s post too ☺️ Do they have a Mac app too?

@pratik I think so.

@SimonWoods agreed. The network effect is massive. I will say that I like the Micro.blog setup for a long term, feels sustainable. With Mastodon, I have no idea if my 'instant' or whatever will stand the long term. No idea if I can move who I follow around (probably can but no idea how), but it is good to see action beyond Twitter.

@kaa There is! Well, not a native one but one of those iOS apps that works on the Mac. And it’s not that bad right now.

@SimonWoods I'm not sure what this beautiful thing is still (mastodon client? So what are the ice cubes in it? I don't get it from the screenshots) but I wanna try it

@kaa It’s amazing what one mention by Gruber can do for an app. Icecubes is a ok client and likely to get better, but several other more feature complete and stable clients are around.

@mcg I'm all ears. I really like Elk, which is a polished web app, but what clients do you suggest?

@kaa The most feature complete is Toot!. It’s also opinionated and full of whimsy.

@mcg @kaa Toot! was one of my favorites but, at least on the iPad, it's not as robust as Mona which is still in TestFlight and requires a license for Spring (Mona started life as a Twitter app called Spring). On the iPad Mona offers customizable panes. I'm currently using 3 but 4 panes works pretty well on an external display. That said, I do miss the whimsy of Toot! In that regard, I think Toot! might be the most original, fun to use app I've seen on iOS or iPad in a very long time.

@Denny @mcg @kaa If you liked Twitterific, you will like Toot! I was more of a Tweetie and then Tweetbot fan. But yup, so many apps to try out now 😍 I'm waiting for a good Mac client so I can sync my timelines across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. I echo @kaa's opinion on Elk. I love that web app but it won't work for my timeline sync needs in the long run.

@pratik @Denny @kaa Haven't really been able to do much with Mona, since buying Spring to get in the beta is kinda unwise these days. 🙂 I was able to view it's preferences screens and it does appear to have a bunch of customizations. Does it support Mastodon well? Ivory for example is really nice, but missing a good bit of what Mastodon can do right now.

Have you used Woolly? It's also in TestFlight and has a really nice multi-column view on iPad/Apple Silicon(also bugs). I like Elk but it constantly looses read position, just by clicking around on the UI.

Remember the old Twitter joke about "Timeline goes sideways"? Check out Trunk, davidbeck.co/apps/trun... . Not something I could use on a busy feed, but for a very slow feed with longer posts, I could see it being useful. I hope generally we see a lot more experimentation like this, something that was stifled by Twitter.

As for Toot!, you are correct, I don't think I've used an app that made me smile as much as Toot does. I can see how some might not like all the fun stuff it does, however. It is almost feature complete with Mastodon. If you can do it on Mastodon, you can very likely do it in Toot!.

@mcg @pratik @kaa As for supporting what Mastodon can do, I think that it does. That said, I've not really thought about what Mastodon can do and compared Mona to that any kind of feature list. But I've not come across anything I noticed was missing since the first few weeks of the beta. Early days it was missing support for lists which I rely on. But in the past few weeks it's really become about all I can expect for a Mastodon client. The most recent betas seem to be the developer checking off some of those fine details you might be referring to. I'd expect a public release on the app store before too long.

@Denny I'm hoping we as non-Spring-for-Twitter users can try it soon too. It would be great to have a trial version though although I see the developer adheres to the one-time pricing model which is great but difficult to try it out.
