@billbennett not at all excessive, very sensible in fact.

@artnacrea @billbennett it's helpful to declutter physical items because it takes space to store them, but it also takes time to do the decluttering. The payoff for the time investment for decluttering files doesn't seem to be there (and there is better search).

@billbennett I've been coming to the conclusion that there's also a place for massive digital declutterring in my life (ymmv). All those digital photos that I never look at and almost certainly will never look at in future. Ditto email, files etc.

We've become "hoarders", something we think is weird in the physical world, just because we can and since no one else sees it it's OK.

So I'm for backups after pruning. I also want to believe that if it all goes away lots of it is not that important.

@va2lam @billbennett So the large data centre storing files in the cloud, the enviromental cost of network infrastructure, the mining and manufacture of physical disks are all cost free?

Add in the opportunity for AI systems to be using the data for their own purposes.

What's all this data for? Just in case of what?

@billbennettnz I’ve been thinking about combining some tools to index and tag folders full of downloaded PDFs, articles, screenshots and other digital ephemera; to make it all searchable by topic and date, if nothing else, but also to be able to curate it, sort duplicates (or versions), and publish curated “collections” or galleries, and so on. Sounds useful, and possibly even fun.
