Why isn’t there a good thermometer app?

In fact why isn’t ‘temperature now’ just part of (say) the Weather App?

@JohnPhilpin I don’t think the iPhone has an external temperature sensor. I think you might be able get external ones you can connect to.

@johnjohnston

Probably a good reason - BUT

you’d have thought that a temperature sensor would have been relatively simple compared to some of the other things they do?

Also .. if so, how do temp apps that you can get work?

@JohnPhilpin Carrot and other weather apps purport to tell you the local temperature, but I think they do it by connecting to a service and using your location.

A temperature sensor in the phone would be affected by the heat the phone itself puts out, but I imagine you could have another sensor to measure that, and get the ambient result with software.

But these wee devices are all about tradeoffs, and I’m guessing the manufacturers just don’t think that one is worthwhile.

@JohnPhilpin I think, I’ve researched, they would depend on an external device. Maybe Bluetooth? You would think a lighting connected thermometer would be available? I think you can get them for meat.

@JohnPhilpin it seems like all of the weather apps can tell you the local weather using an external API. My Apple Watch always shows the days low, high, and current temp

@JohnPhilpin I have build a few sensors to report the basement and attic temperatures. But those all read remote sensors.

@JohnPhilpin turns out I have an anemometer that measures temperature too. Bottom of a rucksack! Has a not very good app that works with it.
