I’m not one to impulsively cancel subscriptions when I disagree with the leadership or when there’s a misstep, but I’m really starting to question sticking with The New York Times. It’s not a partisan thing. Their coverage feels weak in all the moments when we need it to be exceptional.

@manton they are a broadcast channel for whatever agenda their advertisers support, like most news outlets these days... It's a sorry state of affairs. I trust Aljazeera more than most American news sources these days.

@manton They've been clearly thinking like a business (print what sells) rather than like a news service. The Trump years were great for business and unless liberals like us vote with our dollars, they won't change.

@manton I am surprised it’s taken you this long to realize haha. Some of us knew this years ago. I gave up on NyTimes and WaPo a while back and I have not missed anything - if anything they are getting shittier.

@pratik I mean, this has been the primary journalism business model for… their whole existance? I'm not sure it's any different now. I think their articles are still (usually) really solid. I mostly avoid their rage/anxiety-inducing Op-ed section.

@manton I ditched them for WaPo a few years ago. It has always felt like the right move.

@manton Not to mention their years long tendency towards tranphobic morsl panic (wrapped up in ‘respectable’ rethoric and ‘concerns’).

@briandigital In that case, it's a tabloid and not a paper of record or "news that's fit to print". Also, editorial decisions on what goes on A1 vs. A24 matters. They know they set the agenda, so they use that privilege to further their bottom line and not fulfill the role of the fourth estate. I would now say the same about WaPo and their "democracy dies in darkness" stupidity.

@manton Not to mention that of all the tv, software and media subscriptions I have, it is the most expensive of all at $27 every four weeks. My wife likes the puzzles and the food and feature coverage is top notch but the journalism is suffering from some weirdness for sure.

@manton I lived in NYC for 16 years and had a paper delivered to my door every day from 1998 till about 2005.

I thought their coverage really started going downhill after 9/11, and by 2005 I was done.

@pratik unfortunately, no newspaper of scale and notoriety prices its subscriptions high enough to make a profit (or break even), so they still run ads, and therefore all of them are businesses who want to increase readership to increase ad views. I agree, tho, if you don't like an editorial board, you should not support them.

@manton I’ve been on the fence since I don’t read nearly as much as I think I will, and this latest nonsense pushed me over the line and I pulled the plug
