As the years go by I find it harder and harder to endure noisy environments. I don’t remember being bothered by them, but now find noise extremely annoying.

@maique For me it’s something very particular and that has cropped up over the past few months: I’m more and more annoyed by engine sounds around the neighborhood. Out-of-tune cars, leafblowers, trucks, power tools, etc.

@MitchWagner I can relate very much! Usually we live downtown, but a very quiet part of downtown. Those are the same sounds that are driving me a little crazy: lawn mowers, leaf blowers, random kids speeding with their old cars! None of that in town.

@maique I’ve been puzzling about why this should be. The glib explanation is shelter-at-home, but for me it’s not much different. I’m an introvert who works from home.

@MitchWagner I don’t know it that’s possible, but I feel I’m becoming more introvert as I get older. Maybe just tired, but felt good during the quarantine. Usually I’m (was?) more of an extrovert, enjoyed the company of people. Now I just want to be alone or with a couple of really close friends. I find other interactions very tiresome.

@maique I may not be becoming more of an introvert. I may be becoming more comfortable with my introvert nature. I used to beat myself up for not getting out more.

@MitchWagner @maique Many personality traits strengthen with age. I started out as a very strong introvert and when I hit 40 noticed some thing start to…shift. Loud noises, bright lights, and more all started to drain me in ways they never had before. Then I figured out that I'm also an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) and many, many, MANY things about who I am started to make infinitely more sense. I'm finding it fascinating how many of us here on MB seem to fall on the Innie side of that trait spectrum...hhmmm…

@jessekelber I may fall into that category, yes. But this is not something I felt all through life, I’m just noticing it now... Maybe I felt like this a bit, but always assumed I needed the rest, because life was just too hectic. But I enjoyed that chaos, knowing I’d get the down time I needed afterwards. Not sure if this makes any sense... @MitchWagner

@maique It absolutely makes sense, you're an Ambivert. Most people lie somewhere toward the middle of the introvert-extravert spectrum and will find themselves sliding one way or the other over the years. You're just seeing a slide toward the innie right now. It may settle into a new reality for you, or you might find in a year or so that you're sliding your way back.

Go with what feels right when it comes to rest vs activity, quiet recharge vs active recharge. Your intuition will serve you well, after all you know you better than anyone else does, right?

@jessekelber Thank you 😊 That makes a lot of sense, yes. Fingers crossed I know what’s best for me 😊
