A meta-analytic review of over 800 teams indicated that individuals are more likely to generate a higher number of original ideas when they don’t interact with others.

Preparation is key for the sessions. Second best is allowing for personal reflection inside the session. There is one exception , though, in my experience - when the topic / question for discussion itself is blurry. In such cases, a relatively small group, embracing the mess and throwing paint at the wall is effective in outlining the patterns for broader discussion.
