OK. This doesn’t feel like good news: Getty Images is acquiring Unsplash.
@adders First, Getty bought iStockphoto and now Unsplash. It's sad how easily internet companies can slide into a monopoly position.
@adders a great pity. I wonder if this news could be a salve: George Oates Returns to Revitalize the Flickr Commons | Flickr Blog
@adders Couple of decades ago, my lawfirm hired out our first website design. By the time Getty’s lawyers came around with iron fist outstretched, palm up, we had no idea where the designer was to prove he’d gotten licenses. It leaves a bad taste.
@johnjohnston Doesn’t Getty already have some kind of deal with Flickr?
@jeremycherfas That rang a bell but looks like it might be over. My opinion of Getty images is poor. A primary school I worked in had a postcard project. Got postcards from all round the world. Kids took photos of them and posted to postcard blog. Head Teacher got scary bill from Getty as they identified one of the blurry snapshots as theirs.
@adders I saw this and thought oh no 🤦🏻♂️ not good at all. I don’t like Getty images at all anyway and so why buy this service - although the announcement sounds cheery I don’t buy it. Seen to many cherry announcements to know they are never the full truth
