It’s time to turn off auto-renew for Evernote premium. I only use it for importing Kindle highlights from Clippings.io now and free is good enough for that.

@stefp certainly with the many alternatives out there - just notes is leaps and bounds beyond everbloat
@JohnPhilpin Thanks. I really like Bear (Mac) right now. I just wish there was an easy way to get my Kindle notes into it.
@stefp I THINK it was @Solari who introduced me to Bear a couple of weeks ago - and very much enjoying it ... definitely trying to lock down on software I use and have a feeling Bear will survive.
Ulysses, Editorial, IA Writer and Bear on iOS Scrivener, Ulysses, IA Writer and Bear on Macs
Oh and Pages / Notes / TextPad ...
Oh and Omni Outliner on Mac with ‘Outliner on iOS’
Never used Evernote for writing - never will
Installed DevonThink the other day - it won’t survive the free trial - I don’t need the learning curve - kinda like Scivener - I have it - but currently way too complex
Bit by bit ... Locking things down ... for most things I didn’t need too much complexity in the app - but Mac / iOS back and forth very important
Which is a shame for Editorial ... which I do like on iOS ... but IA Writer on Mac has full compatibility with the text amend markdown apps in Dropbox that Editorial points to.
Currently 90% of my writing gets published into micro.blog, Wordpress, DayONE, Pages
Just in case you were interested!
@stefp I use Bookcision to download my Kindle highlights and, personally, I use DEVONthink, but you could paste into Bear, I'm sure.
@JohnPhilpin Always interested in this stuff. I don’t do any long form writing so the things I use tend to reflect the shorter. I’ve probably tried everything you mention though.
@jacob Thanks. I’ll take a look at that. Bear makes it very easy to import Evernote stuff so Clippings > Evernote > Bear shouldn’t be too time consuming.
@JohnPhilpin As much as I'd love the honor, it wasn't me who suggested Bear. I can tell you the story of how a real life bear hunted me down in the woods in Canada one of these days, though. ; ) P.S. have DevonThink and while it is great, it's overly complex IMO. I use Ulysses for all my writing on Mac and iPad (and iPhone for those fleeting moments of inspiration). I thought Bear might be duplicative of Ulysses, which is why I didn't get it. What's your thinking on that?
@solari I first started to use Bear, then Ulysses and was going to ditch Bear but it turned out that Bear was better for keeping small pieces of information while Ulysses is for serious writing (interesting enough I use BBEdit for tutorials etc). DevonThink is a completely different think in my way of thinking, this is a place to store PDFs (both ordinary PDFs and those web pages I've "printed" to PDFs), reference material, etc, etc.
@jemostrom @solari yes - that makes sense to me … i find spotlight is good enough for what I need to find stuff - and i don’t do massive research ... so DevonThink is overload … I like Ulysses and Bear - but I have a feeling that Bear is going to get too cumbersome for long form writing … Editorial and IA Writer are for me both Ulysses overlaps - but with lower cost models ... that said Ulysses is mac and ios - so a BIG win from my perspective … still thinking !
@solari ok - thanktou .... so now I have to revisit who gave me the Bear heads up - and it is at this point I really want the ability to search for mentions of ‘Bear’ in my timeline and discover the @nameassociatedwithit !!! meanwhile - that story sounds like an excellent piece that needs to be captured ... a modern day Jack London tale if ever i heard one?
@JohnPhilpin @jemostrom I get what Bear does after looking more thoroughly at it. It's also a beautiful and functional -- reminds me of Vesper. That said I prefer a pure writing experience with minimal distractions and Ulysses fits the bill since that's what it focuses on and pretty much nothing else. I also like its ability to publish to Wordpress.
@solari Yeah, it all depends on what you're writing. I'm happily using Bear, Ulysses and BBEdit for writing but for different stuff.
@solari ... i am THINKING that where @jemostrom got to is where I will be ... I guess the reason that there are so many writing apps is that there are so many different people with different needs .... who knew?
@JohnPhilpin @jemostrom It's a beautiful world when we can choose from so many awesome apps for writing and such. : )
@JohnPhilpin As for the real bear, it's a longer story I'll write up one day. I was hiking an abandoned log road up a mountain and a hungry bear followed me. I ended up having to confront it when the road dead-ended. The sight of that big thing galloping right at me is forever burned into my brain. Needless to say I'm still here, alive and well (and unscathed). Looking back on it, it was an intensely spiritual moment where everything fell away and it was just me and the bear and life.
@solari never faced that kind of existential crisis ... but often wonder how I would handle it ....
@solari @JohnPhilpin @jemostrom 👍🏻
