@manton @danielpunkass great episode this week! It doesn’t really do what you’re looking for, but there is already multiple user support on AppleTV. Your ideas would make it a lot more useful!
@jeff @danielpunkass Thanks for listening! At this point it would take a lot for me to go back to using an Apple TV, but I'm curious if Apple will make another run at improving it or just continue to partner with smart TVs.
@hjertnes We just use the built-in apps in our Samsung TV (about a year old). It can do AirPlay, Apple TV+, Netflix, etc. I prefer it now because it's just 1 simple remote for everything.
@manton I have a similar tv but I use the Apple TV, partly because I have 0 trust in giving any password to Samsung, and the iPhone as a remote feature is awesome
@hjertnes Yeah, I don't 100% trust these smart TVs, although we've disabled all the settings that try to track you. Mostly we watch streaming shows so those platforms know everything about us anyway! Oh well.
@renevanbelzen @manton @hjertnes I’ve read that support for security updates on smart TVs is lacklustre at best, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable having a vulnerable device on my home network.
@renevanbelzen I think streaming platforms like Netflix or Disney+ are actually in charge of updating their apps. But I don't know exactly how everything fits together or whether they need Samsung approval.
@manton I made an app for controlling my entertainment center back in the day (before the world caught up).
@renevanbelzen I thought about doing that if I ever got a Smart TV, but I’d think even siloing off the device in a guest network or DMZ still leaves it open to potential hacks, even if your internal LAN is protected.
