It is clear that some users broadcast into MB but never visit here. Result - any comments/questions you make will never even be received, much less replied to.

A bit like most of my posts.

@JohnPhilpin that’s one of my criterion for follow. I visit the profile to check if the said person is involved in interactions too. If I don’t find much interactions on profile, but if I find what they say interesting, I just follow their RSS.

@amit That sounds like a good way to organize things.

@JohnPhilpin Just like a regular social network, almost 😉

@JohnPhilpin I quite often read quietly. Or start a comment and delete it. I also seem to go through phases of spending more or less time here. I do try to blog without sharing to microblog when I don’t think it will be of interest here.

@JohnPhilpin MB is currently my last web hold-out for open-ended conversations with strangers on the web. I can't imagine why anybody would use it as a broadcast-only tool.

@simonwoods because they broadcast everywhere?

@JohnPhilpin I guess. At that point I just disregard them as negligent and prone to spammer behaviour. Probably a little harsh.

@simonwoods @JohnPhilpin There was a time when I couldn’t see why anyone would use Twitter as a broadcast-only tool. People (many, though by no means all, of them marketers) see nice things and feel impelled to ruin them.

@artkavanagh @simonwoods @JohnPhilpin What do you think about company/organization blogs on micro.blog? As these are much more likely to be broadcast-only, as it can be weird to interact with people from a company account. Case in point, I am using micro.blog for my personal blogging (hi!) and for my company blog as well.

I wasn't sure about having the company blog here, exactly because this place feels much more personal, and I didn't want to spoil the "magic" somehow. On the other hand I really like the minimalistic blogging experience, the indieweb culture and ideas, and figured more support to the project was a good thing.

But yeah, the "dynamics" of communication of organizations are very different, and I'm left wondering whether there's a place for them on this platform, or they'll always feel out-of-place, almost by design. Would love to have your take on this.

@giov Sounds perfectly fine so long as it's clearly a company account. My only issue is when the account is that of a person, supposedly. I just don't like brands parading around as people. // @JohnPhilpin @artkavanagh

@giov what @simonwoods said - there are a few ‘brands' on MIcroBlog - it is clear that they are - and they aren’t ‘giant’ brands - what happens the day CitiBank turns up? I don’t think they will - for a while at least.

@JohnPhilpin @simonwoods @giov We have strict community guidelines against unwanted @-mentions plus no ads or promoted posts. The Discover timeline only features personal microblogs. It would close to impossible for a commercial account to get in the face of people who didn’t actually want to follow them.

@macgenie makes perfect sense. It says a lot that the kind of things I was worrying about, are actually only worrying in unmoderated ad-centric social media platforms. I guess one gets used to the broken status quo. Thanks for your answer, and for cultivating this community!

@JohnPhilpin @simonwoods yep, brands parading as people is why reddit has slowly become yet another unhealthy corner of the internet. Totally with you on this.
