Something I’m trying to understand about micro.blog: If someone just wanted to try it out and see what the community was like etc, would they be able to without hosting a blog here, or setting up an external site? If they stay within the 280 character limit is there anything stopping th... micro.brandonshire.blog: micro.brandonshire.blog

@DrOct You do need a blog to participate in Micro.blog. The timeline is a layer of social engagement for independent microbloggers. Our mission is to encourage blogging on a site where you control your own content. We aren't trying to be a replacement for Twitter.

@DrOct That said, anyone can try out and participate by registering for the 10 day free trial of Micro.blog hosting. Afterwards, they'd need an external blog to integrate or sign up for the monthly Micro.blog hosting.

@macgenie so out of curiosity, what would happen after that 10 days? Would they stop being able to make new posts? Would they still be able to reply? Or would their account essentially get frozen in amber until they linked an external blog or signed up for hosting?

@DrOct Right. They wouldn't be able to post. The posts that were already created would still be on the web. We don't like broken links.

@macgenie Cool. Just trying to understand what the parameters are. I was sort of exctied by the idea of trying to blog more anyway, so I just went straight for hosting once I came back to Micro.blog (after not quite getting it the first time I tried it out last yearish), but I wasn't sure what the options would be for other people.

@macgenie "The timeline is a layer of social engagement" I like that phrasing and I think it helps clarify what that part of micro.blog is and what it's about. I think I'm starting to really "get" it finally.

@macgenie It would be cool if there was some easy built-in way to gift a membership to someone. Like a scholarship for someone who you want to see here, but who can't (or won't) pay.

@sharding Agreed. I'm adding this and @DrOct's questions to the list for the Q&A with Manton that I'm working on for the next Micro @monday Microcast.
