I overestimated how long Libby’s book request feature would take & now I have only five days left on my loan of The Sympathizer. (I didn’t get a notification?) The download was restricted to wi-fi; getting my ancient Kindle Keyboard on my institution’s network was a headache.

@schuth turn off wifi until you are done with the book - it'll return only after reconnecting

@kitt Thank you! I assumed the file would lock or something after my loan expired. No late fines with this approach? (I’m in the middle of three other books, so this tactic would really help!)

@schuth my g/f uses this trick all the time! 😀

@schuth the book auto-returns to the library on the due date with Libby, it just doesn't delete from the Kindle until the Kindle connects to the Amazon servers. This has worked for me with the Kindle app and separately with a Kindle Paperwhite for me.

@schuth also, Libby has the hold-suspend feature where you can suspend a hold for days to 6 months. You keep your place in line, but don't check out the book until the hold becomes active. To adjust, look under "manage hold" -> "edit hold" and adjust the dates

@schuth I have my reading list scheduled out for about 3 months, using the Libby hold-suspend feature. I love it. I also use it to sync ebook and audiobook checkouts, so that I have both formats at once. This way, I read, then shift to audio when I walk, then back to reading.

@kitt I’m going to have to take notes — your approach sounds perfect. I‘m hoping my luck with finding Kindle-compatible loans in my local public library system improves. (More miss than hit so far.) It seems like the perfect setup for exploring new (to me) authors & topics.

@schuth depending on where you live, some library systems are state-wide, so you might be able to get multiple library cards. Los Angeles Public Library, for example, is open to any California resident. Worth checking online for city, county, and state library systems.

@kitt I have been using the Kindle airplane mode hack for overdue ebooks for a while now. And checking out ebooks, rather than dead tree books, has saved me a bunch in overdue fines. (Though I never feel bad about throwing money into the library's coffers!)

@macgenie I hope they never fix this bug. I hope they are never pressured into fixing this bug. I love it. 🐞
