As I read Dave Winer this morning, I was reminded of one of the tenet’s of People First.

@JohnPhilpin His article was well-stated. He and I are the same age, so there was an extra frisson of resonance.

@JohnPhilpin @Miraz Yes, Dave has written well about ageism in the past, but now that he'a about to turn 65, it is hitting home for him in a new way. I went past the 65 mark without really thinking about it, as no one cared in the accounting industry, if you knew your stuff, and I did. My brother is gonna retire in October, so that's got me thinking about maybe retiring myself one day. I'll be interested in reading about what happens for Dave as things go forward for him. Thanks for pointing me to Dave's thoughts on the subject.

@JohnPhilpin I think ageism in this context is just the tip of the iceberg. The United States worships youth, and I think that is symptomatic of a bigger problem of not appreciating wisdom. We sorely lack wisdom today, instead we rather satisfy our emotions. While it is possible for one at a young age to be wise, wisdom is mostly commonly gained through experience. If China or the global south become the new world leaders I strongly expect it will be due to how they value wisdom.

@JohnPhilpin I was inspired by Ashton Applewhite's TED talk, [Let's End Ageism.] She opens noting how worrying about getting old is often worse than the reality of being older.

I like how she notes how ageism cuts both ways. I would like to see people stop using arbitrary categories to describe age groups so they can be pitted against each other. I like knowing and appreciating people across generations.

@macgenie thankyou - saved to watch tonight.

and yes i t does cut both ways … you often read BS about how millennials want xyz and boomers want abc - i read the millennial list and call BS - i want it all.

it is zippo to do with age and everything to do with the state of mind - i know 70 year old teenagers and 25 year old octogenarians.
