Finished reading: The Lathe Of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin 📚

So good, of course. This one is going to linger in my brain.

@Annie I'm reading The Dispossessed right now, my third book of hers. Each has been so good.

@samgrover @Annie The Dispossessed is one of my all time favourites. I should really get around to reading more of her books!

@davidmarsden @samgrover @Annie I am reminded of this quote from The Lathe of Heaven that I saw recently: commonplace.wyrdbyword.xyz/archive/0...

@davidmarsden @samgrover I loved The Dispossessed. Am making a focused effort this year with my reading to spend more time with the authors I really love. Hence, Le Guin (among others). // @clorgie

@Annie "Am making a focused effort this year with my reading to spend more time with the authors I really love." --- a wise path, or at least one it took me way too many years to discover!

@clorgie I feel like middle age has many gifts and the ability to clarify and focus on what delights you is top tier.

@Annie Since I moved to the coast, I don’t see this view all the time like I used to, but when I see it, I think of this book.

@jean @Annie Although I have not read any of Ursula Le Guin’s books, something that I should probably correct, I did see her speak at an event in Portland commemorating the 30th, I think, anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

Le Guin spoke about being able to watch the eruption from her house overlooking Portland.

@crossingthethreshold @Annie There were some little eruptions in the not-too-distant past on St. Helens, and you could see the steam and ash plumes wherever you had a view of the mountain, like I-405. If Mt. Hood ever erupted, so close to Portland…the thought is impossible to wrap my head around. But it is a dormant volcano, so…

@crossingthethreshold I was really young when it happened (3 or so) but I have vivid memories of ash on the back yard like snow!

@herself I remember watching a documentary back in Britain of the eruption, and it showed people brushing ash off their cars and off the street. I was also young at the time, and the documentary had me captivated. I’d never seen anything like it.

My ability to dispense with so many "shoulds" -- should read this, should do that, should watch this -- increases in direct proportion to both age and the waning of my ambitions. Many chickens and eggs mixed up in there! // @Annie

@jean @crossingthethreshold the very idea of living near a volcano (dormant or otherwise) is mind-bending to me!

@Annie Here in Maui I (and many others) live in the shadow of Haleakala. The mountain’s Wikipedia page offers a quote about the volcano that rather enthusiastically says,

there is an excellent chance that it is not extinct, but only dormant

😁🤦🏼‍♂️

@crossingthethreshold One of my favorite things is watching the sunrise on Haleakala. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do it in a few years.

@crossingthethreshold I went as a kid a few times with my parents. Then continued the tradition with my wife. We're hoping to go again at the end of the year. Horribly sad about Lahaina.

@Mtt Yes, it is very sad what happened to Lahaina. I went over there a couple of times to volunteer just after it happened. Handing everyday essentials out to people who just the day before were getting on with their life as usual. I was back over there a week or so ago. Things have opened up a little more, but there is still a long way to go, and the fires are still very much in the news.

If it feels appropriate, reach out when you come over. It would be lovely to say “Hello.”
