Deb and I have been really enjoying (re)watching Scott & Bailey, a British police procedural series. The three lead characters are compelling, and the dynamics complex and textured. Above all though there is hope and redemption, along with human fallibility. pic 1, pic 2

@Miraz I love Scott & Bailey! And Gill! And Scary Mary. And a show where women are in lots of leadership roles—and no one bats an eye.

My friend Erin and I have been watching as our weekly pandemic remote TV night. We just started Season 4!

@jean Oh, snap. We’re near the end of Season 4 and almost bingeing. 😀 I found Season 3 hard with that particularly grim storyline. I like the way they can have very rough patches but get through them and grow too.

@Miraz We actually started to view this last week, two episodes so far.

@Miraz It was fascinating to see Nicola Walker in the role of a extremely troubled character. I admired her as a detective in both River and Unforgotten.

@jean She's very familiar from something, but I’ve seen neither of those. Checking her Wikipedia page though I can see various things she's been in that I have seen, particularly Last Tango in Halifax.

@Miraz @jean I love that show! I like the relationship between Gill and Julie almost as much as that between Scott and Bailey. I even wrote about it 7 years ago.

@Miraz @jean Nicola Walker was Ruth Evershed in Spooks. Kind of a ridiculous show, but she was good in it.

@bsag @Miraz Nice post. I do love the interrogations in this show, where the skills of the lead characters are so subtle and dead effective. I think I enjoy British cop shows more than US, because the characters are more fleshed out and diverse. And thanks for reminding me of Gill’s colleague DCI, who is also so good. At one point in our remote watching, I paused to say to my friend, “I can’t believe we are watching two detectives, two superiors, one coroner, and one top brass on a case together and they are all women.”

@artkavanagh @Miraz Ha! At first a thought “I’ve never heard of it. A ghost show?” But I have heard of it, under its American name MI-5.

@Miraz I’m going to have to give LTIH a try. I’m apparently a big fan of Sally Wainwright already. I really liked Happy Valley too. It was constantly popping up as recommended for me, but the title and police uniforms in the poster didn’t appeal. I probably waited a year to give it a try.

@jean @miraz Yes, they are always so calm and quiet when they are interrogating people. It’s a very different style to one you see on other detective shows, but I remember hearing a real detective say that it is more realistic.

@jean Yes, it was called MI-5 in France too.
