This is one of those amusing regional colloquialisms I shall never tire of, having grown up in south Louisiana where they are called what they are: liquor stores. twitter.com/impudente…

@retrophisch The crazy quilt of state and local alcoholic beverage laws is certainly amusing/confusing. I’ve lived in FL, NC, NJ, NY, and now OR, and every place is different. I think my favorite was the “ABC store,” which really made it sound innocent in NC. That’s where we also had the terms “brown bagging” which was finally superceded by “liquor-by-the-drink” in Chapel Hill in a 1978 referendum.

@jean In New Orleans, we had drive-thru daiquiri shops.

(They still do, we just haven’t lived there in over 20 years.)

@retrophisch I’ve always heard New Orleans was a fun city! The Oregon Liquor Control Commission finally okayed cocktails-to-go, which will hopefully help local restaurants. OLCC is our most draconian state agency.

@jean Growing up, my dad always said he was gonna stop at Aunt Becky’s Cafe. What part of NC did you live in? I live in Greenville, home of East Carolina University (which is how most people know of Greenville)

@jmreekes Ha! It took me a second to get it. My family started spending summers in the mountains in 1968 (we even have a view of WCU in the valley), which eventually led me to choose UNC-Chapel Hill, resulting a kind of in-state feeling at out-of-state tuition rates. (To be fair, it was quite cheap back then compared to today’s college prices.)

@retrophisch I grew up a Navy brat and that’s what they were always called on base. I didn’t know what else to call them when I grew up.
