@jean I loved this. I would have guessed from reading Sontag that she was a tough customer. It’s cool that you actually knew her, though I’m disappointed that you didn’t grow a skunk-stripe in your hair just from dealing with her.

@jean Thanks for sharing! I have read "On Photography" a couple times, and will likely read it again in the future. It's amazing how much of what she wrote back then is still relevant in this very different photography (and videography) landscape.

@JohnBrady Thanks for reading the piece. From this vantage point, I can see that she was entitled to be demanding. She was a foreign language genius. But I was truly afraid of her, and a small section of my hair did go white during that period. Like the rest of it, it really doesn’t make a difference now, 35 years later.

@jean Even though none of my bosses were ever as illustrious as Sontag, I can vividly remember similar feelings of dread at work. The march into a meeting where I knew I’d either come out bruised and ruined or quickened to continue.
I hope she provided better interactions while you were there too.

@jean Thankfully I never got that stressed out dealing with writers, mine were all scifi and fantasy writers. A little less daunting than Sontag. But how wonderful that you got to meet her (even under duress).

@alexandra Yes, I was fortunate in that job to get to know some interesting people. I wish we had iPhones back then so I would have selfies. Though I’m certain that Sontag would have declined. 😉

@jean Yeah, my era was back in the 80s and early 90s. No phones back then. Would have been fun.

But still, some great memories of the people and places, I'm sure. I know for me, it was an honour.
