Recipes. Seriously. Tonight I picked up the knife for a “preparation 5 minutes” recipe. First ingredient: whole bulb of garlic (10-12 cloves), chopped. lol

@bjhess Oh, recipes like that are the bane of my existence 🤣 The other classic one that I keep seeing is "X cups cooked rice"…
@rom Heh, at least I understand when it is a recipe for fried rice! But I feel like I see it in nearly every recipe that uses rice, even ones where you don't really want the sorta-dried texture that you do for fried rice. IMO the main culprit seems to be recipe bloggers not wanting to admit their "30-minute weeknight recipe" is actually a 50–60 minute recipe 🙄
@jayeless I am curious if this existed before the internet. (I always hear it's most egregious when it comes to carmelized onions.) I should look at some old cookbooks. The cooked rice is 🤣 - just tell me the dry amount!
I've started to just double whatever prep time I see. This is how I used to do software estimates as well! Consider carefully what I think it will take, and the double it.
@bjhess I need a lot more than five minutes to peel 10-12 garlic cloves. Depending on the stubbornness of said cloves.
@jean I know, right? Not to mention the sticky chopping. (I mean, you could crush them, but it said chop for a reason I'm sure. I ended up chopping only half of them. :)
@bjhess Tips: you probably know about laying the flat of a knife on the garlic clove and crushing it with your palm to detach the skin from the clove. Also, if you're using salt in your recipe, putting it on the clove and chopping amidst the salt makes the stickiness much less of a problem.
@JMaxB I knew the first, but not the second. Thanks! Now if I can do that plus everything else in 5 minutes, I’ll be a master chef. :)
@jayeless hahah! Well, they're maximized for views. They more clikcbaity they get, the better for them. I have not really paid attention to those quick meals. I look for the "3 ingredient healthy" recipes kind. :)
@rom Haha, I wouldn't say I look for those kinds of recipes. More what happens is I see a delicious-looking meal somewhere like Reddit, and the person's linked to the recipe in the comments, and it's something like that
