🆕📝 Micro.blog offers an indie alternative to YouTube with its ‘Studio’ video hosting plan

What was at first going to be a quote post about the new feature turned into an essay about how this fits with Micro.blog’s ethos and why it’s good for the open web.

@jarrod Great points. I’m conflicted about the tiered approach still. Maybe Micro.blog Premium should get 2-minute videos? 4K is on my mind too. I left it off because I want to see bandwidth costs for real users first. Maybe 4K should be exclusive to Studio so the price jump makes more sense.

@manton True! You can always adapt later after seeing how it’s received and real-world usage. Maybe your initial approach will turn out just fine. 🙂

@manton I don’t think most of us would need 4k. Video content on phones, in particular short form and like the square ones you are making currently to test out, are fine in 1080p and even 720p. Even within the micro.blog browser window we aren’t using 4k when scrolling. 4K for long-form content? Yes

@manton In my opinion, if possible, it would be nice if a video could play automatically in a loop whenever its file size is below a certain limit and it doesn’t contain an audio track.

@cesco Hmm, we can consider it. I usually don’t like looping automatically but for short videos I can see why you’d want that.

@cesco please no … or if yes .. make sure I … the recipient of said stream of continuous looping … can switch off globally in my viewing preferences.

@manton actually not a bad suggestion. Could build in a loop for videos under x seconds. Once a video is loaded locally, it wont be generating more bandwidth on the micro.blog servers anyway.
