@caseyliss next car you buy, make sure it has a timing *chain* 😖

But they didn’t offer a good-will engine replacement for something that failed within 7 years?

@Squozen lol, hell no. It's several years out of warranty and they're not about to write me a $20k check.

@caseyliss the more I think about this the more it sounds like the belt that was shredded was actually the accessory belt which drives the alternator. Did the grooves run down the length of the belt? Or perpendicular?

@Squozen Yes, the main serpentine belt catastrophically failed, which put a hole in the timing belt cover, and then eventually caused the timing belt to get destroyed as well.

@caseyliss ohhhh, I misunderstood what I was hearing. I’m sorry.

@caseyliss but then the next question is, will the replacement car be an EV?

@Squozen No. Whenever we replace mine, that'll be an EV. Hers will not.

@caseyliss is that because there aren’t EV SUVs with decent range in the US? Not trolling, I genuinely don’t know. Does the Hyundai Kona exist there?

@Squozen Erin's car is the workhorse and vacation car. I'd want something of equivalent size, which means R1S (too much money) or an EX90 (slightly too much money).

I need to look at whatever the Kia/Hyundai 3-row is, tbh

@caseyliss my current way of thinking is: get solar and then a secondhand EV that gets a couple hundred miles of range. For the few times a year that you drive further than the EV can go in a single charge, rent. The money you save on fuel should easily cover the cost of a few rentals. I appreciate that doesn’t work for everybody, especially if you’re in the middle of nowhere.

@caseyliss I’m hoping that the electric Cayman and Boxster coming next year aren’t disappointing, because I can’t buy a combustion engine again and I miss my old Boxster quite a lot. 🏎️💨

@Squozen We *could* do that — we just rented a car for tomorrow's trip — but I don't *want* to.

(I think your approach is probably the better one though)

@caseyliss I would run the sums, especially given how EVs depreciate.

@caseyliss unsolicited advice but as a former Hyundai owner, stay away. Their engines are crap and they make you jump through hoops for recall work. www.cars.com/research/...

@jag but what if there is no engine

@caseyliss well, I did replace the brake light housing and wiring under warranty 6 times due to melting, so I suppose the lack of an engine would one less thing to worry about 😁
