There’s so much good music out there that I’m tempted to make an “only buy from Bandcamp” rule. 🎶

I’m so frustrated by labels that focus on streaming or selling from bad distributors. In the before times I could at least pickup the disc at a show.

@toddgrotenhuis Say a fella is largely unplugged from Bandcamp.

Any tips on navigating to find stuff said fella might like?

And/or: Have recommendations?

(Grunge in hs, Industrial in college, kinda modern dad-rock lately … plus Girl Talk)

@v quick thoughts:

  • create your profile using a few tags for your tastes, then the weekly newsletter will have some new stuff for you to explore
  • follow some bands or labels you like, to get notified about new releases
  • follow friends or folks with some crossover tastes, and you’ll get roundup notices about stuff they purchase (btw, my musical core is probably industrial and branches from there into electronic, metal, jazz, hip hop, and other things)
  • if you have a music collection already and an iOS device, try the MusicHarbor app to find out about new releases and check for them on Bandcamp
  • if you use streaming services, treat them primarily as discovery services

We’ve also got a handful of micro.blog artists on Bandcamp! @hollyhoneychurch for example, shares beautiful harp journeys. Maybe somebody has a directory?

@toddgrotenhuis I went into a real life, brick and mortar, independent record store today and it was amazing. I didn’t know such places still existed. When I left I was tempted to unsubscribe from all streaming services and only buy/discover music through this store. 😂

@toddgrotenhuis @v 😻 Thanks 💖 Todd 😻 Chris, Bandcamp gets interesting when you follow people who have written cool reviews you resonate with. So then, when they buy new music, you'll see it too on your daily feed and that will help your musical sphere expand into all sorts of undiscovered yummy places. Have fun!

@toddgrotenhuis I almost never listen to streaming music, and all of my digital music is owned/downloaded. Although I can't quite shake the urge to buy vinyl... we have a great local indie shop. I like your rule!
