Highlighted: Book Highlighter

Oh. My. Stars! Where has this app been all my life? Take a photo of passages in physical books you wish to highlight/remember, it OCRs them, and makes them searchable and (and, AND!) you can save/share them in plaintext! Plain. Text!

BRB, Swamped.

@patrickrhone Looks amazing, but I wonder how I would deal with switching back and forth from physical to digital. Even when reading a script on my iPad, I prefer marking it up with an Apple Pencil. Something about the hand-to-brain cognitive mapping. 🤔

@Bruce For me, I will likely use it as a searchable backup to my physical book highlights (I read and prefer physical books over eBooks) and a way to share those on my blog or to specific others via email.

@patrickrhone Sweet. Also, readwise.io has added this to their pilot mobile app.

@patrickrhone This was my dream for quotation.al but I got stuck on a technical issue I couldn't overcome with my abilities. Cool to see someone else make it a reality.

@ChrisJWilson I wish there was a price attached. I'd pay five or ten bucks for this without even a second thought.

@pat I wish they charged for this. The fact they are not makes me... Uncomfortable. Not uncomfortable enough to not use the hell out of it. But, still.

@patrickrhone This is fantastic. I used to use Text grabber, but this is much better. My only concern is business model.

@patrickrhone Yep, I know exactly what you mean. I would've been more than happy to take your money 😂 Maybe one day I'll get back to it.

@patrickrhone I love this. Thank you for sharing. As you say, where have you been all of my life? I have tried it out and it works so well and easily. I am concerned about the lack of cost, how sustainable is this (or maybe he is just a very generous developer and book lover)?

I wondered what the sign in was about at the beginning? Saving highlights to my iCloud account? There is no mention of this in the app description.

I jump between physical and eBooks and see that the developer is planning eBooks in the future.

@patrickrhone This looks nice. I'm using a similar feature built into the Readwise.io app and it's super useful. Have fun!

@patrickrhone I used the in app feedback to suggest charging to the developer and they sent a nice response with their current reasons and inviting more feedback as to fair pricing. Might be worth doing the same.

@toddgrotenhuis does readwise have plain text export?

@toddgrotenhuis Nice! I’ve been meaning to try Readwise, but I’ve been waiting for them to get Sign-in with Apple working. 🤪

@ChrisJWilson tabular/csv export (https://readwise.io/export) and api/JSON export (https://readwise.io/munger) and sync to evernote. It's not straight text plaintext because there are more elements with each quote, but you can easily get it out multiple ways.

@jack I'm trying the Readwise app and the OCR function works excellently. It seems like a very expensive service but I think I'm going to pay up after my extended trial ends.

@stefp I'm really enjoying the Readwise service, so I find the subscription to be acceptible, but yeah, I wish it were more like $1.99/month or so.
