@pratik Thanks for the feedback. I get that perspective. It's not a technical issue, it's that I think the posting screen should be as uncluttered as possible, where most things "just work" without having to configure anything. Perhaps there should be an advanced setting for this.
@manton Glad you took it as constructive feedback. I agree about the uncluttered look, but it can be customized for power users. Talking about what the default setting should be for the cross-posting was the primary intent of this post.
@pratik very much agree with your points, albeit from a different perspective, I think at least users should have the ability to choose how cross-posting behave for their blog.
In my case, it's on post by post basis, sometimes I want it to go everywhere, sometimes just to Mastodon etc..
@pratik @manton I’m glad we are still talking about this. I do want some of my posts to go to Mastodon and Bluesky, but not all of them, and since I can’t easily decide cross-posting per post, I end up not posting as much as I want to. For me this option isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s actually keeping me from participating fully on this platform because of privacy and safety concerns.
@rmdes That’s kind of where I was coming from. Micro.blog is where I have decided to have everything so I post on a variety of things, sometimes even to just archive things. But I also want the option of posting some content elsewhere without re-posting it when I want to.
@pratik I kinda like Indiepass for that, but because it's not designed for micro.blog specifically, more for #indieweb in general, the option to syndicate on demand isn't working (micro.blog always takeover and cross-post even if you only select one or two destination only) but the idea is there 🤗
@pratik hmmm I don't think that's the case? I think it's very hard for a small hobby dev to be both android dev and iOs dev fluently, unless it's their daily job
@rmdes Got it not singling out this app but just a comment on indie web in general. Most users in the US and also likely to pay are on iOS.
@cygnoir @pratik Maybe part of why I see it differently is because I consider cross-posting to be an optional feature. What if Micro.blog didn't have cross-posting at all? If cross-posting is making things worse, it's better to turn it off. However, I hope this becomes less of an issue when the mobile apps catch up to the per-post toggle we have on the web.
@rmdes That sounds like a bug. Micro.blog does support the Micropub syndication parameter, so I'd expect it to work with IndieWeb apps.
@manton No crossposting would mean a whole lot of trouble to get things as good as they are today. I believe it’s one of the features that make M.b awesome.
@manton oh please don't turn it off, it's one of the main reason I stopped selfhosting my old blog, I wanted this feature integrated to the blog itself so badly I made the jump to micro.blog 🤗
I think when the mobile app is on par with the web app it's gonna be natural to select where to crosspost
@manton hmm let me try again then.. Last time I tested this I ended up disabling LinkedIn because I had personal posts going to LinkedIn even tho I was not selecting it as a destination via IndiePass, the gold would be for the selection to be remembered in between each post 🤗
@manton sweet goodie, I think micro.blog is the only tool that make it that easy to POSSE to Mastodon, Twitter, Nostr, without having to mess with scripts/code, I love it!
@manton I'm not saying that how @pratik or I want to use it should be how everyone has to use it. Personally, cross-posting was one of the main reasons why I joined Micro.blog in the first place. But that was five years ago. Being online is different now for many of us, much more dangerous, and we need more granular options for cross-posting so we can participate fully and safely.
@manton not to pile on, but simply to join the chorus of @cygnoir @pratik and whoever joins in, when I 'got micro.blog in my head' I'd decided it to be the definitive 'Josh broadcasting station' and the cross-posting was a nice way of letting the fools on the other networks know I was alive and had content. Today it's more nuanced but my workflow is the same. I micro.blog it first then, take it elsewhere if I feel it necessary.
@manton I was just thinking about making a forum post on this. Not being able to turn it on and off while posting makes me less likely to post. Lots of improvement in the app, but this is a major problem.
Side note:
LinkedIn crossposting for some reason defaulting to “connections only”.
@handy We do set it to connections-only… Unfortunately I can't remember why. Either it seemed like a good default or someone requested it to work that way.
@handy gotcha. It’d be nice to open that up or make it a setting. Posts that are connections only don’t get any reach on LinkedIn.
