@christopherchelpka So how did you figure out how to export your FB posts to your blog? Manually (that is, copying and pasting) or is there some semi-automated method?

@garciabuxton I’m doing it manually. I do have one tip though: switch from list view to grid view. (I did this on a MacOS; it’s probably not possible in iOS.) I can choose what to pull and what to ignore much faster this way.

@christopherchelpka I’ve been screen-grabbing memories from the “On This Day” feature and posting them on my blog. It’s tedious, and I have a ways to go before I get everything I want for the year, but I wanted to grab those before finally pulling the plug on FB.

I did download my FB data, and I haven’t had time to pore over all that; I’ll have to schedule time once I can get over how overwhelming the prospect of doing that is. Meanwhile, it’s been easier just to go to the site and do grabs on my phone.

@garciabuxton I am planning to explore Ditchbook, which @cleverdevil created, initially to help @cleverangel to transition off Facebook to Micro.blog. It is way over my head, tech-wise, but Jonathan is super nice and if I make it through the process, I'll let you know and help you!

@macgenie Thanks, Jean! I glanced at Ditchbook on Github, and it looks waaaaaay over my head as well. But I love the idea. I look forward to hearing about your experience with it!

@macgenie @garciabuxton Maybe Manton could build it into the Mac app like he did Instagram import? That would make it much more useable to a portion of the Micro.blog community, at least.

I thought the instructions seemed pretty straightforward, but step 1 was an SSH key fingerprint error, step 2 was what turned out to be a missing python version, then I went a few rounds with virtualenv and so forth before finally crashing out in ditchbook itself, so, yeah, going to be way over the head of a non-developer :-(

@smokey Straightforward is in the eyes of the beholder. I literally have no idea where to start when the first step is "Ditchbook requires Python 3.6 or greater to run. ... Install inside of a virtualenv:"

Facebook is a lot more complicated than Instagram. (I think. See para. 1 above.) I've been rummaging through the download of my FB and my head hurts. We'd also need to weigh the demand for a FB import solution against the priorities of M.b. resources.

Not too many people have used Ditchbook. I understand from Jonathan that there are issues to be resolved. Let's table this discussion until (Micro) Monday... Hashtag: spoilers

@macgenie

Straightforward is in the eyes of the beholder.

Exactly. I meant to my eyes, as someone who once played a developer on IRC, it looked straightforward—not that it would look straightforward to other people ;-) (And then I discovered it was not, in fact, straightforward even for me.)

Oooh, can’t wait! (You’ve got this marketing thing down pat!)

@macgenie from Twitter:

@lornajane: This should be a blog post, a good explanation of some of the Python configuration stuff I struggled with at the start, from someone who helped me a lot! twitter.com/judy2k/st...

I understand the why…
