@Ron @macgenie @manton I agree it comes down to purpose. If the purpose is to be a social network, then it is helpful to provide users with ways to connect with each other. If the purpose is to be a publishing platform, then you focus on publishing and not on the networking.
IMHO, likes and follower counts are the disease, not the cure.
