“Scrolling is easier than clicking”

@baldur I think this is on the right track but misses the reason scrolling is preferred. We are spatial beings and it’s much easier to grasp where things are in relation to each other on a single page. Even if you scroll to do it. Clicking takes you to some jarring new place.

@baldur Our human craving for a spatial anchor also explains why so many people dislike parallax scrolling effects. Some even find such movement to be nauseating.

@baldur I fear that this logic is going to open floodgates for infinite scrolling (which I think fails the spatial anchor test @fgtech mentions, because you never know where you are for long…) :-( And in some cases, the decision to click means you decide not to click and stop doing X, versus continuing ad infinitum with, well, infinite scrolling.

Both ways can be used for good or evil.

@smokey @fgtech I like the point about spatial anchors. Like you say, people don’t prefer scrolling, they prefer a consistent space that they can create a mental map of. Which supports the point about why infinite scrolling is bad.

@smokey @baldur That is an excellent point about infinite scrolling. Pondering the infinite is a great way to get lost in your head. Scrolling the infine can likewise get you lost on a web page.
