After years of setbacks, the cryptocurrency project started by Facebook is coming to a close. The group behind Diem has sold its intellectual property and technology assets to Silvergate Bank for $182m in cash and stock. Update March 13th, 6:09PM ET: Added information from a Meta spokesperson. That said, the more obscure metaverse tokens may not have liquidity for fiat trading pairs. Therefore, traders may be required to first purchase a bigger cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin BTC or Ethereum, before subsequently swapping it into the more niche metaverse token they desire. One last thing: Per The Verge, Meta is potentially adding new “social tokens” or “reputation tokens” that could be given as rewards to Facebook group members. It’s not likely that Meta will rush headlong into the cryptocurrency space once more. FT reports: “Staffers are now trying to find the least regulated way to offer a digital currency, two people said, with a digital token that is not based on the blockchain emerging as the most attractive option.”
