🆕📝 OpenAI’s 4o model cost me a whopping 62 cents last month

And I use it a lot! If you’re paying $20/month for ChatGPT Plus just to use the API, you’re vastly overpaying.

@jarrod Or 323x more than I paid for OpenAI’s API last month 👆 😳

@jarrod I've spent $10 on the API over the past year - using your shortcut almost every day as well as lots of proofreading a general knowledge searches. I have the APO plugged into a bunch of apps

@amerpie Ah, I meant to mention that you might be able to save on other app subscription costs if they let you plug in your own API key!

Screenshot of an update to the blog post saying, “Update: I meant to mention that some other apps will let you plug in your personal API key to enable OpenAI-dependent features. Drafts is one example. Some apps will offer that as an alternative to paying extra for AI features since you’re removing them from needing your requests through their API and their expense. It can save you from needing to pay each developer directly for AI features, and I’d like to see more apps offered that option.”

@jarrod I’ve suggested this to the Croissant’s developers for the alt text after uploading an image

@jarrod Thanks for sharing this. This is a cost-risk-free way to use OpenAI.

Whats the difference between this two limits.

Is it riskfree to leave the first value on this high amount?

@jarrod really interesting. I pay 20 for Claude (Anthropic), but I really like their interface and ux. For me it's worth the ~19 a month that I would otherwise save… But I say this without ever having tried to work with the API for my personal usage.

@thosch Thanks for reading! The first is OpenAI’s limit. They wouldn’t let me pay over $1000 even if I wanted to. The second is a limit I set. I don’t want to pay over $10 per month.

@fabio I’m tempted to try Claude. I hear good things.

@jarrod I like Anthropic because it feels to me more of a lab and OpenAI more of a business. I can’t say though if it’s real or just excellent marketing from Anthropic. Claude is excellent, incredible comprehension skills but I can’t compare it to ChatGPT because honestly almost never used it.
