I built Scale Lab — pick a root note, choose from 14 scales and modes, and watch the notes light up on a piano keyboard. Hit play to hear them ascend. Just a bit of music theory fun. Enjoy!

@llbbl That’s very cool! I’m actually teaching modes in my theory class this week, I might just send this to students to play around with.

Some feedback would be that the color scheme of the keys is a bit confusing. The pinkish notes looked like they were highlighted rather than not part of the scale, especially compared to black keys. Maybe all the pitches of the scale are in the same color but tonic is a little darker or something? Anyway, very handy little tool!

@isaacgreene Cool, okay. I can fix it. Are you talking about the black keys on F# and G#? I don’t see anything close to pink. You wouldn’t happen to be color challenged when it comes to red-green hues? I should probably change the color scheme so its more accessible? email me so can talk longer?

@llbbl Oh, I realized I had nightshift on this morning so the white keys looked weird. Looks a lot better now, but I still think having tonic in the same color as the other notes in the scale (just a darker hue or something) would be a little clearer.

Not colorblind, but I don’t mind you asking :)

@isaacgreene Its updated now. New colors and tonic is different color than the end note. LMK if you find any other issues with it. 👍
