I hope one day, if I get through this with my sanity and health, we look back and find it odd that in the first week of Trump’s 2nd term, looking for someone to blame, all eyes turned to… Manton. The guy who has been fighting Trump for 8 years. The guy who has volunteered on campaigns against Trump. The gu... www.manton.org

@ddanielson You should be ashamed of yourself for that post. You have no idea how much shit Manton has gone through when the mob decided to go after him. Manton is a great human being and has built an incredible space and community.

@manton This is a crazy time for circular firing squads. I’m truly sorry this affected your emotional well-being, but from what I’ve gleaned I hope you move on. You know who you are and what you stand for. Mobs of any stripe are antithetical to ideas and open discourse. They’re kind of proving the point.

@manton Hang in there Manton, the platform is great, and you seem to be a very decent human being to me. This is but a small moment that shall pass.

@pratik There is no difference between the Micro.blog entity and me. It is my company, fully, and everything “we” do reflects my view of the world. If I’m an ally, then the company is an ally.

@manton I’m with you to the end, but the Committee for Public Safety seems to be speaking pretty loudly. There are so many quotes from Robespierre to choose, but I think “pity is treason” pretty much sums the moment.

@manton These things are probably unavoidable, especially right now with everyone deep in their feels and unable or unwilling to make distinctions. The beauty of your platform, though, is that peoples’ moving on doesn’t mean a rupture of social connections because these are largely platform independent anyway, except where people elect to keep their MB account disconnected from the Fediverse. None of it feels good, but you can look at all of this as a proof of concept. Conflict wasn’t avoided, of course, because we’re human, but MB is proving resilient, I believe.

@markstoneman The community seems to be showing some resilience, although apparently the storm hasn’t blown over yet. But unless he chooses to share that information with us, we don’t know how much of a financial hit Micro and @manton might have taken.

@manton I’m inspired by your willingness to be open publicly in a way that is authentic and not self serving. Even if you may be paying the price for that openness this week, it will pass, and your long record of kindheartedness will win out. Hang in there.

@stupendousman Forget it. When one considers the individual and the company as the same thing, I cannot discuss it further. Individuals can be moral or ethical, but companies are bound to their fiduciary responsibilities. Hence, you can close down a company due to losses, and no one will accuse you of murdering a company. You can create a company culture that attracts individuals that you feel aligned with in terms of principles or talent or, ideally, both. Company culture can change with time to be financially viable, but individuals generally have core values that don’t change. People who know the difference run successful companies by knowing which people with what values they want to serve. Of course, you can’t please everyone so you have to choose whom you want to please. I guess that choice was made clear here @manton.

@stupendousman The day I become a corporation that fires people with no regard to their character, their remorse, or whether they have a wife and kid to support, that’s the day I shut it all down. I know it’s hard to see, but I made the right call.

@manton Standing in your truth and facing the music must be hard going Manton. I feel like the conversation needed/needs to happen but the intensity has been way disproportionate and overly personal. Maybe you need to re-fill that empty community manager position? Or something. Anyway. You have my support. Take care.
