Finally got episode 463 of @coreint edited and published. We talk about WWDC being just weeks away, and then go over the new “bookshelves” beta feature in Micro.blog.

@manton Looking forward to trying out the “bookshelves/shelves”. Still hoping to put the micro.blog book in it too. ;)

@manton Re: Bookshelves, I think the books world has certain features (the ISBN for example) that make it easier to implement as part of micro.blog than other media have. I don't think you should be in any hurry to make Bookshelves into Shelves! Two requests, one easy and one probably hard:

  1. A public/private toggle for my Bookshelves
  2. I've done a good many "Currently reading" posts since the Book search feature was implemented, and it would be super-cool if I could import those into my Bookshelf (so I could reclassify the ones I've finished reading, etc.) But that might be tricky to code.

Thanks for this, Manton -- Micro.blog just keeps getting cooler and cooler!

@manton Was amused (I may or not have talked to my phone) that when exploring different ideas of what could go on the 'shelf', podcasts didn't come up!

But seriously, to add to the guiding principle part of the convo, I think if the question is 'does it support and help MB users share what they would on their blog', then books+media fit that description in the same way that photos or video hosting fits that description.

I can't see why MB couldn't integrate with an API like the Podcast Index or Listen Notes which would allow me to share to the blog+feed an episode I found interesting. In fact, I'm biased towards the former (although I love what LN has been doing) as they've enabled a soundbite tag in the namespace for podcasters to mark snippets for sharing.

Like books, it would enable sharing episodes like I did here, but without the steps I needed to clip out and then embed them.

@ayjay Thanks! Finding existing "currently reading" or "finished reading" posts and loading them into bookshelves is something I want to do. For the public/private toggle, I think bookshelves should be private by default, but if you set them to a published blog page, then they're public.

@Chirag I hadn't considered podcasts! I guess music and podcasts are similar (and slightly different than audiobooks, which take much longer to listen to).

@manton I really enjoyed this discussion! And I hope book/shelves do ship in some fashion! It sounds really useful and something that would add value to the community here. Books definitely seem to be the place to start, IMO. And I like the idea of extending jt to other media later on.
