Ramping up the search for our next home. For old neighborhoods, love doing a little background research on who developed the neighborhood. Doesn’t actually matter, but it’s fun to discover where it came from… Sometimes land originally granted by the Republic of Texas to veterans and settlers.
@manton We had a fun time researching the land ownership of our house lot here in suburbia Phoenix. Using source docs from National Archives, we even ended up discovering that the commonly agreed upon history for our area (which was based on oral histories) does not match the documented history.
@rscottjones That's really interesting. Usually I'm impressed by the documented history, but there are often holes in what is accessible online.
@manton I think that was the primary issue. The local historian couldn’t travel to DC to look at the actual homesteading applications, so he relied on the old timers who were here and took their word for it. But we could look at the digitized records from our couch.
Funny enough, we found out that the “founder” of this area wasn’t the one that homesteaded; it was actually his wife, and seemingly with another man. So it doesn’t take much to see how that origin story changed over time.
@manton Are you looking at townhomes? We recently visited someone's and found it nice. It can be more centrally located yet affordable than a SFH and have the benefits of a condo and a SFH.
@pratik We’re actually renting a townhouse right now (in Mueller) and it’s great. Sort of want to try an older house again next, but we change our mind weekly.
@starrwulfe Nice! When I’m feeling especially cramped in my car I am jealous of larger vans and RVs. 🙂
