Was looking at Mammoth for Mastodon. Immediately uninstalled because it showed me news. The point of moving away from big tech and whatever else other garbage big social network is so you can curate your own list.
Make it opt-in. Imagine I put random news into my app. Pish.
@vincent Agreed. The official Mastodon app has the same feature. I want to know how things make it to that page. Is it links that are shared the most within your federated timeline? Or is it some kind of curation? Eagerly awaiting Ivory to see if they steer away from that.
BTW really enjoying Gluon and the feature to turn off sponsored posts at no cost. I leave them on bc sometimes there’s something cool, but I greatly appreciate the option!
@davids No idea how they're curated... seems very suspicious to me because they seem very specific. I follow 4 peeps, so doubt it’s from my following, so must be federated and/or local somehow.
Thank you about Gluon. Yeah, kinda trying to think what to do with those “ads”. I certainly want to make it so you can just turn them off without splashing out money… kinda undecided if I want to keep them now.
@vincent On the administration panel there’s a “Trending” sub-panel, with Links, Hashtags, and posts. Might be related to that. I haven’t been paying much attention to that, since I’m the only one using it, but get daily emails with a warning about stuff waiting for my moderation.
I suppose that, if an administrator approves them, this is where they might show up.
@vincent I think there could be a place for news in these platforms, but not from algorithmic trends and not in your face when you're looking for people.
