Steve Bate has a long blog post about why ActivityPub’s client-to-server protocol has not been implemented:

Yet despite its promise, ActivityPub C2S has seen minimal real-world adoption. Most Fediverse platforms — including Mastodon, the dominant implementation — have actively avoided supporting it. Instead, they expose custom APIs that tightly couple client behavior to server internals.

More clients should use Micropub. It is also a W3C recommendation, but unlike C2S, Micropub is already widely implemented and has evolved through extensions to accommodate most real-world use cases.

@manton ActivityPub, Micropub, yadda yadda yadda. The most predictable thing is that Mastodon would reinvent the reinventers.

@dave I don’t have a lot of confidence that Mastodon can transition away from their private API. This is why it’s always best to start with something that is open.

@manton

we can solve the problem right now if you want, put a very simple createPost and updatePost rest interface on ActivityPub, test the hell out of it with Mastodon, and then I’ll write a Markdown editor (you can write one too if you like) and we’ll turn Mastodon into a blogging platform and blow everyone’s minds. Mastodon has done enough to do something interesting with it. Automattic got the ball rolling, but we need something more bare-bones.

@dave

one more thing, we can get Rich Siegel to support it with BBEdit, to just totally nail it.

BBEdit ==> Mastodon

Bing! :-)

@manton

here’s the key point that imho you are missing.

mastodon has already done enough.

it’s up to us to build something based on what they’ve done.

@dave Okay, maybe we aren’t exactly on the same page. I want Mastodon to have an open API for posting. Sounds like you’re saying we should have an external bridge that maps MetaWeblog API to ActivityPub? Both WordPress and Micro.blog can do that. In theory there could be an even lighter-weight service that did it.

@dave Heh. It has been a busy week, sorry if I’ve misunderstood. There are a lot of different ways to approach this problem.
