What is the Drafts action you are using to upload an image to Micro.blog to create a markdown link to insert in your draft? This one is no longer working.
What is the Drafts action you are using to upload an image to Micro.blog to create a markdown link to insert in your draft? This one is no longer working.
@pratik I don't use a Drafts' action but the iPhone app Mimi Uploader by Micro.blog's own @samgrover.
I upload the photo(s) in Mimi Uploader which then creates the necessary markdown formatted link(s) which I share to Drafts. From there I can compose my post.
@crossingthethreshold @maique Cool. I use Mimi too but was looking for a Drafts action for the Mac. Also, prefer not to jump between apps.
@pratik I just got the Drafts action that you linked to to work on my iPhone. It appears to do the same as Mimi Uploader but straight from Drafts (with a side step to Shortcuts). I have not tested it on my MacBook Air yet. I’ll try it later.
Did it use to work for you and then stopped? At what point did it stop working?
cc @maique
@crossingthethreshold When I click on the Workflow link on that page, it opens the Shortcuts app but not a specific shortcut then doesn't do anything when I run the Drafts. Maybe the Shortcut is not set up correctly. Which on do you use?
@pratik In the Drafts action description there is a link to a Shortcut, named “Workflow” in the description (was that the old name of Shortcuts, I can’t remember?), which you have to download.
It is necessary to go into your Micro.blog account to generate and app token for the Shortcut, which you enter when you first setup the Shortcut.
To save you going back to the action description here is the link to the Shortcut
@pratik OK, this is taking me down a rabbit hole that I'll have to climb out of soon! 😄
I have just taken a look at this action on my MacBook Air and it does not appear to be compatible with the Mac version of Drafts, even though the action is enabled for both OS and iOS. It might require some modification. Now you've pointed this action out, I can see me exploring if this is possible! A couple of years back Drafts got a major update for Shortcuts compatibility, though I have never looked into it...maybe now is the time.
@pratik I managed to get it to work on Mac OS. It does not feel quite as clean as the iOS version and you have to run it multiple times if you want to use it with more than one image.
I followed these instructions, TIP: Calling Shortcuts from Drafts, and a new action was created and installed in Drafts from the action that you linked to.
@crossingthethreshold I'm glad I dragged you in it too :) I had other ways of making it work but wanted to do it all in Drafts on the Mac.
BTW this might be a stupid question but where do I add the app token from Microblog in the shortcut you linked to?
@pratik Sorry I miss read your question. When I installed the Shortcut it asked me to add the app token - that's when I entered it. You could skip that part. My guess is that it will then prompt you for the token the first time that you run the Shortcut?
@crossingthethreshold Can you link to the iCloud link for the shortcut? The Workflow one isn't working for me
@crossingthethreshold Cool. That now worked on the phone. Asked for the app token the first time so dunno what was going wrong the first time. But it says, it's not supported on the Mac. I'll figure that out.
@pratik Well done! Did you see my earlier reply re the Mac? I got it working, albeit not as clean as iOS IMO. Trace back up through this conversation.
@pratik @crossingthethreshold @maique, not going to go down this route, as Drafts j overwhelms me. However, the photo app looks good. How are we going to get this whole thread into a @help reference page ?
@crossingthethreshold Oh yes! Just figured it out. Had to create a duplicate Action for "Upload for Mac" just for my sanity sake. Otherwise quite confusing. Thanks a ton for responding so quickly.
@pratik I'm pleased that you got it working. Yes to confusing. This has been a learning curve for me. And thank you for making me aware of the Drafts' photo action. My workflows might be changing!
@Munish I had stayed away from Drafts earlier for this reason but now find it indispensable. And I am not even making use of most of its features (Workspaces, etc.) Also, Shortcuts for iOS and Mac still not being fully cross platform has messed some workflows and Drafts is also evolving to support such actions only recently. @crossingthethreshold @maique
@pratik @Munish @crossingthethreshold I bookmarked this one, very interested. I was just messing around in Drafts, for another reason.
@crossingthethreshold ok feeling the peer pressure. Going to try Drafts. How do I setup the post to micro.blog? As the one action I added, has not requested a token 🙈 Sorry in advance. You talk about Drafts and now I am going to ask a lot of questions lol
@Munish @crossingthethreshold @maique for clarity. Is there a way to send from within the Drafts app like Ulysses ?
@Munish Take it one step at a time, that's my advice. It can do everything and made me feel overwhelmed at first.
@Munish You're welcome, and thank you for your advice as well. I've been using Drafts for a while now, and still just scratching the surface. Whenever I feel I need it to do something new, I'll look for it, and most times it's there. But this app can handle a lot more than what I'm using it for. Still it's perfect for my needs.
@pratik It’s taken me a while to start using Workspaces but I absolutely love them now. I’ve only got a couple I use on a regular basis. One for my blogs which filters tags, and defaults to an action group for uploading images to my Blot folder and publishing
@jmreekes @pratik @maique @crossingthethreshold thank you so much all. This community is so amazing. Question is, when do you stop spending on subscriptions. Just discovered Grammarly is available for mac too :-)
@Munish @pratik @maique @crossingthethreshold That's the hard question these days. For me, it really comes down to how much I will truly use a service/app. Drafts, 1Password, Fastmail, Fantastical, IVPN, Dropbox, etc are essential to me
@Munish @pratik @maique @crossingthethreshold Other subs, like Craft, Ulysses, Obsidisn Sync (their sync service), while nice, I could do without. Grammarly is great but I wouldn’t use it enough to justify the cost.
@jmreekes in a similar position. Not sure I can justify drafts and Ulysses though. Just saw how much Grammarly was and decided it’s cheaper to go back to and do an English course lol
@jmreekes @munish @pratik @maique @crossingthethreshold I love Ulysses and think the subscription cost is justified. However I wouldn’t complain if iA Writer adopted more long form support, along with direct posting to Micro.blog instead of having to go into the M.b. app to complete it. That would lure me away from Ulysses and the sub cost.
@pimoore That's probably good feedback to tell iA Writer if you haven't already (publishing instead of only saving as a draft).
@manton I actually haven’t though that’s a good idea. I’d like to run by them the option of having better long form novel writing support like Ulysses does.
@pratik I stayed away from them for a while, but once I started using them I found them invaluable.
@ChrisJWilson Correct, but unfortunately their solution doesn’t post directly to Micro.blog like Ulysses does. It can only post as a draft, requiring you to go into M.b. and publish yourself. I don’t know why it works that way, as it’s likely using the same API as Ulysses does.
@pimoore ah ha. I understand now. I wondered if there was more to it than just basic support.
@Munish There are a few actions connected with Micro.blog. Here is one to post to your Micro.blog account written by the developer of Drafts, @agiletortoise .
Note this from the action’s description,
First time running this action, you will need to provide an app token generated from your profile at Micro.blog
@crossingthethreshold @manton Well, that’s disappointing to read. Seems not within their best interest to not provide feature parity with (one of) their biggest competitors.
@crossingthethreshold @munish I use this one by @craigmcclellan since it lets me add categories and a title when I post. I see that Craig is no longer active on MB but the Action still works.
@pratik @munish Yes, I have that one in my arsnel as well. Very useful. My needs have changed with time, but I keep a handful of actions in Drafts in case I might need them later, and I find looking at how actions are written has taught me a few things about how Drafts works and has enabled me to create a few actions of my own.
@crossingthethreshold Feel free to share your Actions :) I have dabbled into Shortcuts on Mac/iOS so now have to explore how to link them to Actions in Drafts.
