Just tuned into the last part of Biden’s speech today on the border security and foreign aid bill. He looked good and made a strong case. Really dumbfounding if Republicans don’t back this. 🇺🇸

@manton If they approve, it's a win for Biden. Can't have that. If they obstruct, they yet again prove their hypocrisy. They'll probably obstruct. Their hypocrisy doesn't seem to bother them much. I read the legislation last night. Sponsored by a Republican. I have, as usual, as few quibbles. Overall, it's solid.

@paulcraig901 @manton It doesn't seem to be about the contents of the bill. Instead, there are enough Rs who don't think the hypocrisy will damage them or their unelected tyrant overlord's election chances. Sacrificing Ukraine for him nauseates me.

@paulcraig901 Yeah. The hypocrisy is so transparent to everyone, though, I wonder if it risks undermining Republican candidates in the fall. To a certain extent, blocking the bill shifts the problem away from Biden.

@clorgie @manton There's that as well. Excellent points. I too am in need of Pepto Bismol.

@paulcraig901 @clorgie @manton The Republican gambit here will backfire on their candidates. Border security is the one issue they’ve been able to effectively hammer Biden with. By killing this bill before it ever gets to Biden’s desk, they’ve given him the perfect defense. “Sure, I’d love to help the situation - Send me the bipartisan bill authored by conservative Republicans and I’ll sign it today”

It’s not going to convince any die-hard Trumpites, but it will be a persuasive argument to make for the who might otherwise vote for Trump.

@dynamitemoth @paulcraig901 @manton I understand the dynamics in the same way you do...I'm just not so sure there is a significant (enough) group who will be persuaded by that message to either vote when they weren't otherwise going to or switch their vote. The Republicans (at least most of them) know they will get hammered by that message. It ultimately comes down to how many persuadables and true undecideds there are and if this is sufficient motivation. I hope it will be. I fear it is not.
