Rolled out a few tweaks to following Mastodon users in Micro.blog. Mastodon recently switched from Atom to RSS (cool) but did not redirect old feeds, likely breaking most clients (not cool).

@manton Redirecting from a URL expected to be in one format to another URL in a different format would be wrong. If I'm expecting JSON and I get XML, that’s not good. I prefer the 404.

@clonezone Nah. It’s much more important that things work as well as possible. If something breaks in the clients then it is likely the users will experience problems and the whole point of all of technology is to reduce problems.

As for people who know more on the technical side of things, we can deal with it without being catered to more often than not. We’re not that important when it comes to technology being useful at the endpoint.

@clonezone For JSON to XML, I agree, but Atom and RSS are much closer formats. Feed readers wouldn't have any trouble with it. If redirection wasn't an acceptable option, though, an alternative would be to just keep supporting the Atom feed URLs as well so nothing breaks.
