@circustiger I thought so too. I am and have been a humanist for a long time. I bought the book when I finished the piece. Glad it resonated with you too.

@mbkriegh I've read a bit of Ray Kurzweil's work (one of my favourite musicians sings his praises, and that inspired me to delve deeper) and his thoughts on technological singularity really struck me. Was the book a good read? I might add it to my list.

@circustiger I havent read it yet. Just bought it because the Lithub post was so compelling. Re Kurtzweil, I gave a talk at the New York Society for Ethical Culture a bunch of years ago about AI (which I refer to as Alternative Intelligence) which used The Age of Spiritual Machines as one of its primary sources. You can find the text here. One of the most memorable passages in that book was an extensive quote from the Unibomber’s manifesto which is quite striking.
