To stop using YouTube until November, I’ve retrained myself to launch the Duolingo app instead whenever I think about tapping over to YouTube. I think it’s working. (Finally re-learning Spanish.)

@manton That is an awesome idea to retrain your app usage and muscle memory! After watching The Social Dilemma (and in general wanting to stop using big algorithm based social networks/services) I added all my favourite YouTube channels to my RSS reader and just watch them in there. NewExplorer even has a Apple TV app.
@manton if you are on iPhone you could create an automation that opens duolingo whenever you tap on the YouTube app
@manton curious. Where you “killing time” there in a idle... random-ish way ? I certainly resent the centralization of video onto YouTube and the concomitant power that gives their algorithm, but I almost never follow any “next” prompt on any platform - and especially not on YT
@manton I’ve been using Feedbin to subscribe to a handful of individual Twitter accounts in a similar way, now that I’ve trained myself to open NetNewsWire instead.
@SciPhi I have auto-play disabled and try not to click through recommendations, but I have a handful of subscriptions (mostly travel vloggers and a few tech folks).
