@furstenberg I’ve trended the other way. Appreciating 1Password more recently.

@furstenberg are we talking «the shit has hitteth the fan» iCloud problems, or a couple of hours unreachable?

Regardless, I think its local on device and eg. a Time Machine backup will have a copy of the keychain as saved on the machine.

@canion And if it works for you go for it.

I was tired of all the situations where it failed.

I accessed 1Password at least 100 times a day. Of those times it would fail at least 20-30.

And it used to be never.

@teisam The first one. Where you couldn’t even access those locally. Since you first would have to log into iCloud. Which failed, always.

@furstenberg Ah. I’m also planning to switch from 1Password to iCloud Keychain (not because I have problems with the former), more because I would like to simplify stuff.

I also assuming no access to local copies is because of the shit has hitteth the fan with regards to the home?

I've solved that by having a silly amount of iPads/iPhones/Macs at multiple locations 😃

@teisam I'm not saying it has to be like this for everyone - but I kinda find using a third-party password manager a sort of simplification itself. Especially because 1Password is both available everywhere, and accepts so many different types of input.

Because, now I don't have to worry about choice of platforms (or specifically, my family's choice of platforms), browsers, etc. And I don't need to use something like Notes to fill in the blanks of data not supported, etc.

(I also personally don't want to have something that important tied to the major platform vendors - so it being third-party is an argument in itself. But I specifically wanted to touch on the point about "simplification" this time around! ☺️)

@Havn I'm just me, I have no need for sharing, I mostly use Apple devices, for the few non Apple devices there are satisfactory avenues for getting the password to that device in a secure manner.

And my simplification isn't just 1Password to iCloud Keychain (if I elect to go that route), it's also to start using the included apps more since for the most part they're sufficient for my use. Reminders are good enough for me, yet I've tried countless alternatives. I used to adore Fantastical, but Calendar is more than plenty for me.

And while I used 1Password for saving important notes and documents before, the last few years it has mostly been logins.

Lately I've decided to be a bit more deliberate with digital note taking and reading technical documentation as PDFs with highlighting and adding notes. Since those two things probably will happen more on an iPad than a Mac, I've tested a lot of apps in those two categories for the iPad.

While eg. GoodNotes and Notability are excellent apps, but in the end I think Apple Notes are enough for my use. And with PDFs it will be Preview on macOS, and Files on iDevices (though I have started to be a fan of Highlights).

Because I often fall in the trap of looking for the perfect tool instead of using the tools I have available.

@teisam I can't find the link now, but there was a recent icloud issue where lots of people where locked out of their account. And you couldn't even use "anything" on your devices since you had to verify your password before getting access to your stuff again.

@furstenberg yeah I was considering same move but recently my Apple ID keeps claiming to be locked and I have to unlock it which is ok if you have another device at hand preferably a laptop so I don’t feel like the risk BUT maybe I won’t need 1Password. Family any more

@furstenberg But I'm pretty sure you would have had access to your passwords since they are stored locally on device even if you use iCloud Keychain, but you wouldn't be able to sync new ones. The same with 1Password.

So even if you were unable to access iMessage and iCloud, you still should be able to get your Gmail password for logging into Gmail.

@adamprocter Having done the move, I am really pleased with it. It works great for me and the family.

@teisam My understanding is that you were not able to get access to it. Or any other data "locked" on your device.

I still have done the move, and I like it a lot. Just need to figure out a "backup" plan as well.

@furstenberg yeah if I can get family to use that as getting them into 1Password and explaining how to remember a master password had always been the issue 🤣 I know one of them has it on a text somewhere 🤦‍♂️
