Working on some more flexibility this morning to give people options for blocking Threads and other instances. Mixing lots of account types in one system is increasingly complicated: Micro.blog usernames, Mastodon handles, IndieWeb domains, newsletter email addresses… Spaghetti code.

@manton there's a really good blog post somewhere where you map out a mental model for all of this (or even the ERD you've constructed). Just having the sort of Mindmap/chart for how you think about these things and relate them would be cool.

@jsonbecker @manton I'm immediately reminded of the post, How does Micro.blog even work? — which is probably a good thing to link to from the Help Contents.

@jsonbecker @SimonWoods Yes, this is something we've gotta explain better. I know from questions that very few people understand how all the pieces fit together — the timeline, blogs, external blogs, other networks, cross-posting, etc. — leading to a lot of confusion.

@manton to be honest, I think the Indieweb wiki has failed as a communicator of the idea of POSSE, and maybe this is just my desire for someone working on it in practice to go into detail about it.

@manton I think your Indie Microblogging book is great. I would love for you and others to come up with an elevator speech about IndieWeb principles to explain to people why it is important. I alway feel like I'm just ranting when I talk about it (which of course I am).

@manton Yup. I think a day-long whiteboarding sesh with your team is needed ☺️@jsonbecker @simonwoods

@jsonbecker We don't usually use the term POSSE in Micro.blog either because acronyms are a great way to lose people. The spirit behind it is great.

@bloftin2 Thanks! I'd love to do more there. Maybe we need our own "Why IndieWeb?" page.

@manton yeah-- the idea is great, the explanation and execution in many cases is terrible. Thinking about how I wrote up the difference between AcitivityPub v. cross posting the other day-- now mix in identity... woof.

@manton I don't know the first thing about anything when it comes to programming something, much less a web service, but it sounds like the best solution here is just a ton of JSON

@manton I know that indieweb.org has their principles on the front page. It is just hard to get people to care.

@manton @jsonbecker yeah, just saying cross-post seems better to me.

@manton I’m building so many abstractions into Smolblog it’s not even funny. And they’re probably insufficient.

There’s so many…

@manton if only there was a uniform way to identify resources 🤔

😆 I don't envy you.
