Apparently if you rename a file like foodog.mov to foodog.mp4 … it just works.

So why convert it?

And if I don’t need to convert it why can’t we agree on the one extension?

And if we can’t do that … then why not have the apps simply play both?

Is this stupid 🍎 💩again?

@JohnPhilpin not quiet while they are both a container format. The video could be differently compressed inside mind using different codecs such as h264 etc but can still be either contained in a mov or mp4 - mp4 however has wider support and some extra features

@jasonekratz @adamprocter thankyou both.

This all started with trying to get a video to play in-line on the web page. Overcast creates an .mov .. which silly me just uploaded, wrote the script and it failed to display at all.

Exploring more, the script ‘didn’t support’ .mov .. needed to provide an mp4.

First time round I found a web site that did the conversion … pretty easy … and worked.

Next time round I found a setapp app which likewise did the conversion … again, pretty easy … and worked.

But still seemed to be a step too many for something so simple.

So. Looked further. Found a comment that if you just change the extension it will work. I tried that. It worked.

Definitely the easiest solution. I guess I just wonder why mov can’t just be supported? So far, no good reason.

@JohnPhilpin It’s really quite simple...those of you who are playing in the match this afternoon move your clothes down onto the lower peg immediately after lunch, before you write your letter home, if you're not getting your hair cut, unless you've got a younger brother who is going out this weekend as the guest of another boy, in which case, collect his note before lunch, put it in your letter after you've had your hair cut, and make sure he moves your clothes down onto the lower peg for you.

Or maybe just use Flash? 🙃🤪

@adamprocter @jasonekratz thx to you both for providing actual relevant information. Dealing with video formats/encoding can be tricky like unicode, which makes real world info, like containers and mp4’s flexibility, very helpful.

@JohnPhilpin mov wasn’t designed for the web or streaming really so browsers don’t support it from what I understand

@adamprocter Thankyou - so it is 🍎💩 ... they are clinging on to this old format - even in their latest products - so we have to jump through hoops to make it work in 2023.
